U Win Tin , who co-founded the National League for Democracy (NLD) party with Aung San Suu Ky died at the age of 84. He never married and is survived by no children. The cause of death was multiple organ failure. Starting in 1988, Wi Tin spent almost 20 years in prison for co-founding the NLD and wasn’t released until 2008 under a general amnesty program. He had previously worked as a journalist for thirty years and had been the editor of the daily Hanthawathi until it was banned in 1978.
Win Tin was a winner of several awards including the Unesco/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize and also the World Association of Newspaper’s Golden Pen of Freedom Award. Following release from prison he started a foundation providing assistance to current and former political prisoners. Thousands gathered to pay respects at his burial in Yay Way cemetary in northern Yangon.
