The government has approved about 250 hotels comprising more than 20,000 rooms for the Yangon area. Many Myanmar business people are opening hotels having only 50 or 60 troops as they can be built fairly quickly. Aside from Yangon, many tourist destinations still lacked a sufficient number of hotels to accommodate visitors. For instance, the Inlay Lake region, still struggles to handle the growing number of visitors. Those numbers have doubled annually since 2011. Hotel rates overall have also risen from $30 to $190 or more a night at the high end. The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism had earlier placed a price cap of $150 per night in 2012. That cap has been frequently ignored by many high end hotels however.
