Tourism Boom May Test Myanmar Air Safety

Tourism-Boom“We can handle it” said the deputy director general of the Myanmar Departmnet of Civil Aviation. He was referring to the anticipated increase in tourists from 2 million in 2013 to almost 7 million foreign visitors per year  by 2020.  The concern is whether air traffic safety will be compromised in the rush to handle to increased volume. Needed technology has yet to be put in place at Myanmar’s main airport in Yangon. Myanmar currently has 66 airports and airstrips covering a huge area with Mandalay, Naypyidaw and Yangon listed as international airports. The Myanmar government is seeking development aid and foreign backers for new and revamped airports. Conversely, foreign airlines are looking for joint ventures with their Myanmar counterparts.
